The Book
Sadly, loss, death or people leaving is a reality of life. But explaining it to children can be distressing and challenging for parents/ carers and children.
Charlotte’s Shoes is a book that helps to make this situation that bit easier.
Madeleine & Charlotte are the very best of friends, inseparable and with an unbreakable bond. Until one day when Charlotte has to leave and move away, but she gifts Madeleine a very special gift that will always keep them connected and in each other’s hearts and minds.
Sometimes little things help make big things a bit better and best friends have a way of helping us find light in dark times.
Join Charlotte and Madeleine as they find their way through this together.
Dedication
This book is dedicated to our darling Charlotte. Born too early and too perfect for this world.
When we found out we were having twins I remember thinking “how will we ever cope with this” but as time went on we came to love the idea of bringing two little girls into the world and into our family.
Little did we know that wasn’t what was to be, at 23 weeks I went into early labour and our girls, Charlotte and Madeleine, were born a week later at 24 weeks gestation exactly. Charlotte was so so tiny, but so so perfect. At 420 grams, she had perfect eye lashes and beautiful finger nails and she felt our love for 45 minutes before she grew her wings. 6 minutes later, her twin sister, Madeleine, entered this world weighing a whooping 609 grams.
As first time parents we knew nothing about the world of prematurity, the NICU or anything even remotely close. But soon enough we found our feet and our rhythm in that crazy place and 115 days later we bought our little miracle fighter home.
As the years passed, we have found it really challenging to find ways to talk about Charlotte so that our daughters, Madeleine and Edith, can understand and accept it as well as possible and, as a result, I felt compelled to write something that helps explain to children that when people go away, for what ever reason, they can still be near to them in their hearts.
Charlotte’s Shoes is my first book and my hope is that it brings some ease and comfort to families who need to explain absence of loved ones to children in a gentle way that they can understand.
Thank you for reading my book, it’s very special to us and it makes me smile to think that other children might get some comfort from reading a story dedicated to our darling girl.
Forever in our hearts, Our darling Charlotte.
We will always love you to the moon and back.
